Kit Jefferies, a part-time department store Christmas elf, is an artist who loves life and his family. Unfortunately, his car dies at a rest stop in the middle of nowhere as he is heading home for Christmas. Enter Nick St. George.

Nick is a very unhappy man—he's achieved his professional goals only to find the rest of his life bleak and empty. Deciding there was only one way to make everything right, he is on his way to San Francisco on a dark mission, and even the horrible sleet storm that blocked his path won't deter him. That's when he found Kit.

At first, Nick is pretty sure rescuing Kit was a big mistake. Kit's personality is just too, well, effervescent. But as the miles go by, Kit begins to bring light to his dark heart. It might even be bright enough to illuminate a Christmas miracle.

A story from the Dreamspinner Press 2013 Advent Calendar package "Heartwarming".

What a beautiful, moving Christmas story! You might never suspect from the cute and goofy cover and title, but this story is much more than a quirky romance. It is the best kind of Christmas story, one of hope, renewal and second chances, in the manner of “A Christmas Carol” or “It’s a Wonderful Life”. In the middle of a terrible winter storm on Christmas Eve, the paths of two very different travelers cross unexpectedly and neither will be the same. When Nick, a jaded, unhappy, man on a very dark mission, is forced by weather to pull over at a rest stop he encounters Kit, college student & department store elf, a quirky, kind-hearted, life-loving innocent, he has no feelings other than annoyance when he feels obligated to give the stranded young man a lift. But what happens during the journey opens his heart and his eyes, not only to the possibility of life and love and joy just when he needs it the most, but also to the surprising root of his own bitterness, and finally to the recognition that it’s not too late to choose a different road than the one he’s on. It’s a story of Christmas miracles with a hopeful, heartwarming finish that left me feeling a little bit like laughing & crying at the same time. I read a LOT, and I don’t always take the time I should to review the good ones, but I just had to say how truly happy I am to have read this one! I would also love to read more about this couple in the future;-)

Grumble Monkey and the Department Elf edition by BG Thomas Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

This story is my Christmas pick of the year. Every Christmas I look for beautiful m/m romance stories with well developed plots and characters. The year before it was B.G. Thomas's book "All Snug", from which I first learned about this talented author. "Grumble Monkey and the Department Elf" is the author's homage to the spirit of the Holidays this year and it tugged at my heartstrings and kept me reading, wanting to know more about the protagonists. I particularly loved the concept of the Grumble Monkey children story Keaton's mother told him when he was little. I smiled and cried. I could see every detail in my mind and feel what the characters felt. Thanks to B.G. Thomas for this wonderful book! I look forward to know more about the grumble monkey in the future!
Heartwarming and cute and romantic and funny and hopeful! It starts with a snowstorm, and Nick, who is on his way to San Francisco with a plan in mind, rescues Kit after Kit's car breaks down. Nick's back-story made me sad, and angry at the people who almost managed to erase his sense of self-worth, who sent him spiraling into despair. Kit has the complete opposite back-story in a way, he's an artist, he's so innocent in the ways of the world, with a supportive family, and has such a bright spirit. I loved the humor in the story, and there is a deep understanding of what the two main characters are going through, especially Nick since it's his story. And i love best how one comes to care so much for these characters.
Buy yourself the best Christmas present ever this year! Buy this story! I bought it this morning and read it all in one sitting. I couldn't put it down. B. G. Thomas brings two characters (Nick and Kit) to life on the page and even Scrooge himself wouldn't be able to stop himself from falling in love with them. As soon as the two, very opposite characters meet the dialogue becomes so funny that I was laughing til I had tears in my eyes. Nick is the jaded, scarred man and Kit is the eternal optomist. But through all their arguing and bantering you just know that they're perfect for each other. If you're looking for a story full of hot, raw sex--- this is not the story for you. But Thomas' writing skills go far beyond the need for those cliche sex scenes. If you haven't read a book by B. G. Thomas yet, do yourself a favor and buy one (or more) TODAY! His characters are so real and three-dimensional that there's no need for the author to rely on those predictable "sex scenes" to slow the plot down. Thomas' combination of uber-interesting plots and totally life-like dialogue in every one of his books make his books the most readable books of any of todays gay romance writers. I've read everything he's written, and I'm anxiously awaiting his next book!!

Lovely story. Nick is a man who was abandoned by his family ten years ago, a man who hates himself for being gay and hates other gay guys; a man who throws away love when he sees it because he doesn't let himself be and feel; a man who doesn't trust people because past deceptions made him terminally cynical; a man who takes refuge in materialistic rewards because he probably thinks it's safe, safer than people. A man who is angry, hurtful, cold, and half the time he does not even analyse why.

One day, Nick realises that his life is really going nowhere (Seriously? It took him long enough). For too many years he has been unhappy, unfulfilled in spite of his wealth and professional success. But instead of fixing what's wrong, making the necessary changes to his life, he decides to end it all. He plans to do it that Christmas day, which marks the ten-year anniversary of the day he was kicked out by his family. (Kicked out on Christmas day? "Familles, je vous hais.")

Then on Christmas eve, against his better judgement, he gives a lift to Kit, a young art student dressed as an elf, and who is going home for a nice family Christmas. Kit is cute, enthusiastic, optimistic, kind-hearted, and comes from a close-knit family. As Nick slowly drives through the icy night, little by little his heart melts under Kit's good naturedness and warmth. And comes Christmas day, Nick finds not an end, but a new beginning.

I’ve always been fascinated by how differently people react to pressure and hardship. Some get stronger while others break. Nick was one of those fragile people who get fixated on something for years and never move on; it poisons their life but they don't know how to let go. Eventually, unless something, someone, someday, gives them the push to let go and move on, the only way they know to end the pain is to "end it all”. I’m happy Nick met the elf who made his Christmas Miracle happen.
